The number is gone. The specificity is gone. The 74% — which sounded so precise on paper — was something ChatGPT extrapolated from 'I helped make the API faster.' The candidate doesn't know what 74% means because they never measured it. They don't even know if caching was the fix because the AI assumed it was.
The interviewer's pen stops moving. They've seen this before. The resume was AI-generated, and the person sitting across from them can't defend a single line of it.
This is not a hypothetical. Let's be precise about what's actually going wrong, because 'AI resumes are bad' is too blunt and not quite right. The problem is how AI processes the limited context you give it — and how that processing fails in ways you don't notice until it's too late.
When you paste your resume into ChatGPT and say 'make this better' or 'tailor this to this job description,' here's what the model actually has to work with: a few lines of text per bullet, with no access to the codebase you worked on, the team you were part of, the problem you were solving, the constraints you faced, or the actual outcomes you produced. It has your words — and only your words — as the entire source of truth.
From those few words, it extrapolates. It takes 'worked on payment system' and fills in the gaps with the most impressive-sounding version it can generate: 'Architected a distributed payment processing pipeline handling $12M in monthly transaction volume with 99.99% uptime across 3 regions.' That sounds specific. It sounds like something you did. But the model invented every detail after 'payment system.' The $12M, the 99.99%, the 3 regions — all plausible-sounding fiction generated from a 5-word input.
And here's the insidious part: the output is good enough that you can't always tell where your experience ends and the AI's extrapolation begins. 'Yeah, I think we did handle around $12M' — but you don't actually know. You're now defending a number that might be right, might be wrong, and that you have no way to verify because you never measured it in the first place.

That's genuinely valuable — but it's not 'spearheading a transformation.' The AI took a coordination role and inflated it into a leadership narrative you can't defend.
When the interviewer asks a follow-up and you stumble, the damage isn't just that one bullet. It's trust. They now question every other claim on your resume. The AI-polished document that was supposed to help you just became the reason you lost credibility 4 minutes into the interview.
Failure 2: Keyword Stuffing From the Job Description

A deterministic check can detect mismatch between role seniority and impact language — the kind of pattern a staff engineer interviewer would notice immediately.
Does it seem like filler?
Does the bullet contain actual information, or is it padding? 'Utilized industry best practices and cutting-edge technologies to deliver high-quality software solutions' is 14 words of pure filler. A deterministic check can flag bullets where the information density is near zero — lots of words, nothing specific said.
Could you explain this for 60 seconds?
Could the person who wrote this bullet talk about it for a full minute in an interview? If the bullet contains technologies they didn't use, metrics they didn't measure, or impact they didn't drive — it fails the 60-second test. A deterministic check can't read minds, but it can flag hallucination markers: overly precise metrics, jargon density spikes, and claims that don't match the rest of the resume's pattern.
These aren't opinions. They're structural checks with binary outcomes. The bullet either names a specific system or it doesn't. The metric either has a scoped baseline or it doesn't.
