Mistake 1: Unscoped Metrics
'Improved performance by 30%' tells the reader nothing. 30% of what? Measured how? Over what baseline? Unscoped metrics sound impressive but crumble under interview scrutiny. A recruiter will ask '30% of what?' and if you don't have a crisp answer, the bullet backfires.
Fix: Always anchor metrics to a specific system, baseline, and measurement. 'Reduced P95 API latency from 1.2s to 840ms (30%)' is defensible. 'Improved performance by 30%' is not.

Mistake 2: Starting with 'Responsible for'
'Responsible for' describes your job title, not your work. It's passive — it says what you were supposed to do, not what you actually did. Every bullet starting with 'Responsible for' can be made stronger by replacing it with the action verb that describes what you actually built, shipped, or changed.
Fix: Replace 'Responsible for managing the deployment pipeline' with 'Automated the deployment pipeline using GitHub Actions, reducing deploy time from 45 minutes to 8 minutes.' Lead with the verb.
Mistake 3: Listing Technologies Without Context
'Worked with React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.' This tells a recruiter you've heard of these technologies. It doesn't tell them what you did with them or how well you used them. A skills section lists technologies; bullet points should show them in action.

Mistake 4: Vague Scope Words

Fix: Replace every vague scope word with a number or a name. 'Led 3 cross-team projects (8 engineers)' is specific. 'Led multiple large-scale projects' is noise.
Mistake 5: Claims You Can't Defend
'Spearheaded the company's entire cloud migration strategy' — did you really? If you were one of four engineers on the migration team and your tech lead designed the strategy, this bullet will explode in a behavioral interview. Overclaiming is the fastest way to lose credibility with a senior interviewer.
Fix: Describe your actual scope honestly. 'Migrated 12 services from EC2 to EKS as part of a 4-person platform team, writing Helm charts and CI/CD pipelines for zero-downtime cutover' is impressive and defensible. You don't need to claim you led the strategy to show you did real work.
How to Quantify Impact When You Don't Have Metrics
'But I don't have numbers' is the most common objection to writing quantified resume bullets. And it's almost never true. You might not have revenue figures or exact latency measurements, but you have proxies — and proxies are enough to make a bullet specific and credible.
Here are the proxy metrics available to almost every software engineer, even at early career stages:
- Team size — how many people were on the project?
- Request volume — how many requests/events/transactions does the system handle?
- User count — how many people use what you built?
- Time saved — how much manual work did your automation eliminate?
